The time is now for each school to develop a process for Professional Learning Communities (PLC) to ensure that assignments are aligned to standards and guage the rigor of the assignment. Handouts include group activity materials (i.e., whole group, small group, and pairs). This session will model and demonstrate strategies on building foundational knowledge which includes: (a) jigsaw activity teaching DoK levels; and (b) a group discussion using “Rounds Protocol” about how the presented process could be used in team meetings in our schools to ensure students have quality assignments.
Far too many students graduate from high school still unprepared for the lives they want to lead. They enroll in college and land in remedial courses, or start jobs and discover they’re missing skills they need. Is this a secondary school problem? No. It starts from the very beginning. We need to understand why. We will unpack "The Opportunity Myth" and understand what students can show us about how school is letting them down—and what we can do to fix it.
